In this essay, I will reference three particular leadership reviews that will contribute to my analysis of whether all political parties should have leadership reviews. The first example, the 1967 Progressive Conservative Party of Canada leadership review, reveals the advantage of using a leadership review as a countermeasure when the caucus and the rest of the party begin to lose confidence in their leader but the leader refuses to resign. The second example, the 2013 leadership review victory of former Premier Alison Redford, demonstrates the advantage of a party’s ability to evaluate the exact amount of support their leader has, and the result of when a party shows that they have clear support in their party leader during a leadership review.…show more content…
The Progressive Conservative Party of Canada no longer had confidence in Diefenbaker as their party leader. However, because of Diefenbaker’s refusal to step down as party leader, the party could not remove their incumbent leader without calling for a leadership review so that they could elect a different individual they actually had confidence in to become party leader. In this case, Robert Stanfield was said individual the party had confidence in and he subsequently replaced Diefenbaker as the new party leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada when he won the leadership review. The 1967 Progressive Conservative Party of Canada leadership review demonstrates the advantage of using the review to replace a party leader that the party does not support anymore, especially when the leader refuses to resign, and elect a new one that the party does support. Likewise, if other political parties faced the same dilemma that the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada did in the 1960’s, that is, the party no longer had confidence in their leader but the leader refused to resign, if the political parties had leadership reviews then they would be able to initiate a leadership review to counteract the leader’s refusal to resign. Thus, political parties would greatly benefit from having leadership reviews when having to respond to situations similar to the Diefenbaker dilemma.
