Assisting the CNA help me practice several skill presented in CNL. I took blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and pulse oximetry with a vital signs monitor. I also checked temperatures with an oral electronic thermometer. I changed several beds and assisted patients to turn in bed. I also helped deliver meal trays at both breakfast and lunch and assisted one patient with eating. There was a great deal of communication among the staff. Communication between wound care, rehabilitation, housekeeping, dietary, CNA, LPN, and RN all working together to provide broad care. I saw both therapeutic and non-therapeutic communication between the CNA and patients. The CNA was assertive, humorous, and had general respect in content, manner, and tone of voice. I was able to wheel her outside for leisure time to get some sun. I spend time actively listening to her reminisce about her childhood and talk about her children and grandchildren. I also had a non-therapeutic communication by feeling sympathy for a really sick patient. I felt sorry and my heart hurt for him. I wanted to comfort him and tell him everything was going to be okay, but I didn't. Instead I was overly silent. In the future I will work on putting myself in that patients shoes and try to understand how they feel instead of feeling sorry for them. By doing this it will enable me to respond appropriately. I wish I had restated his statements of discomfort and asked him what I could do to make him more comfortable, or just simply held his hand if he would have allowed
