For years bottled water has been sold in stores across the United States promoting false ideas of what water should be. People continue to buy these products in search of a clean and easily accessible source of water. Although they are constantly flooded with images of purity, people continue to buy bottled; a private source of something nearly everyone has access to. Tap water has been shown to contain less contaminates than bottled water, and is nearly 300x cheaper; yet "The bottled-water industry is so successful, it has outpaced milk, coffee, and juice in number of gallons of drinks sold" (Karlstrom). My goal in this paper is to accurately demonstrate why bottled water is a resource this country cannot afford to waste. People have argued over tap water and bottled water for years but it has never been as pertinent of an issue until now. Considering the effect that the production of bottled water has on the environment alone should discourage the purchase of these products. Todd Jarvis, PhD, associate director of the Institute for Water and Watersheds at Oregon State University shares that, "it takes about 72 billion gallons of water a year, worldwide, just to make the empty bottles" ("Bottled Water"). "In 1999 the NRDC tested more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of water...the organization found that at least one sample of a third of the brands contained bacterial or chemical contaminants, including carcinogens, in levels exceeding state or industry standards" ("Bottled Water"). People often drink bottled water because they have heard or been told that it is safer and healthier but tap water has proven to be just as pure.
