Beowulf: The Qualities Of An Epic Hero

Beowulf is a character that contains all the qualities of an Anglo-Saxon hero. He is an imperfect guy, just like everyone else, yet he does not lack courage. Some would say Beowulf exhibits the qualities of a true epic hero. Every epic hero has different heroic characteristics, but Beowulf is willing to go above and beyond the call of duty in order to defend his friends. Epic battles, horrific monsters, super human strength, and great leadership are the characteristics and experiences that make up the epic hero that is known as Beowulf. “So Beowulf chose the mightiest men could find, the bravest and best of the greats, fourteen in all, and led them down to their boat; He knew the sea, would point the prow straight to that distant Danish shore” (44). Beowulf heard how Grendel filled nights with terror, so without hesitating he sent out all of the strongest men he could find when his help was in need. This not only shows that Beowulf is not selfish, but also shows he’s willing to sacrifice the lives of the men he knew to save a nation of innocent people. Being courageous and humble, Beowulf doesn’t ask for much of anything in return. All that is wanted from him, is for the people to remember him. Clearly Beowulf is a courageous person, and will do just about anything to prove his fearless ways. Beowulf is devoted to his people, his king, and their protection.
