An epic poem would be described as a long poem, typically one derived from ancient oral tradition, narrating the accomplishments and adventures of heroic or legendary figures and the history of a nation. Beowulf, one of the many famous epic poems, depicts a true hero fighting for the greater good. Composed by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet in the 700s and existing as the oldest surviving long poem in Old English, Beowulf cites as one of the most important works of old English literature. (l.314-320) Beowulfs second battle involves Grendels mother and the third battle involves a fire breathing dragon. The nameless dragon abducts jewels and treasures and begins to attack Geats. Beowulf, the determined hero knows what he has to do. The hero asks of his men to accompany him on his journey. Beowulf has his men stand by but demands that no one can help him. “And then he who’d endured dozens of desperate battles, who’d stand boldly while swords and shields clashed, the best of kings, saw huge stone arches and felt the heat of the dragons breath, flooding down through the hidden entrance, too hot for anyone to stand, a streaming current of fire and smoke that blocked all passages”.(l.654-661) Wiglaf, the devoted comrade goes to assist Beowulf seeing that he is too weak to finish the dragon off himself. Wiglaf sees the wounded warrior laying on the floor. Breathing his final words , Beowulf asks Wiglaf to become king and requests him to build a tomb on water’s edge, call it Beowulf’s tower and to incorporate his ashes into the walls.
