The two examples of historic democratic societies that I picked were the Ancient Greek Era and the Roman Era. 1. What are the Characteristics of Democracy? In Greece if you were a citizen you would go to the Agora, where you would listen or participate in something called an assembly. You did not need to be elected in order to vote or to be apart of this assembly. You just needed to be a male and not a slave. Any male who was of minimum age who had Athenian blood was allowed to attend and participate. While if you were in Rome you would elect Representatives to represent you and take care of the government or public issues. 2. Are there different types of democracy? There is Representative Democracy and Direct democracy. Direct democracy is where the people get to vote for themselves as long as they meet the standards to attend the assembly. But, if you did meet the conditions, you could have the privilege of being apart of the process. The republic democracy is different in the fact that you have representatives who make the decisions for you. You…show more content…
They then went through a rough time where they had the Dark Ages. This time was about 300 years and the people didn’t feel they were a direct democracy, because they were in hiding and living in the valleys. Finally the times began to change. Prosperity was on the horizon. An Oligarchy, began to forms in most city-states except Sparta. Athens was one of the leaders of the city-states, being open to changes in culture and free exchange of ideas. The leaders listened to the people and made changes. They listened to all people no matter how wealthy they were or were not. Through out history Greece went through different leaders, but overall it kept to a direct democracy that had proved to make them such a great country. If it were not for Greece leading the United States of America in this direction we would not be where we are
