As Langston Hughes once said “Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.” Langston Hughes shows a major theme in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. A lot of ranch hands on the farm have a dream that they want to accomplish at one point in their life even though it’s not feasible because dreams give people hope, willpower, and the chance to escape loneliness. The author makes a clear comment that dreams are important and necessary to lead a happy life and unite people together as long as a person pursues it even if it’s not possible which is clearly seen in the cases of Curley’s wife, Candy, and George and Lennie. He realizes how valuable George and Lennie’s dreams are and he realizes that it is only for him to escape his loneliness. Candy is a great proof of how dreams are important for a happy life when he “went on excitedly”. Had Candy not been at the right place at the right time, George and Lennie’s dreams would have just been a mean of storytelling. When Candy joins in the dream, the dream also creates a bond between the three of them which will never be broken. The whole story, it is clearly evidenced when she says she “could’ve been in the movies” (page 88). A Hollywood producer promised her a letter which never arrived but she falsely believed that her aunt had taken it. Instead of working hard for the dream, she just decides to lead an unhappy life by marrying Curley. She was so naïve such that instead of finding out where the letter went; she blames it on her aunt. She is a great piece of evidence to show that dreams help to make our future better and if she had pursued her future she wouldn’t have been as lonely as she is
