The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits Congress from making any law respecting an establishment of religion, or impeding the free exercise thereof; abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, the right of the people peaceably to assemble, or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. It was taken in on December 15, 1791, as part of the ten amendments that make up the Bill of Rights. The First Amendment was put into the Constitution for many reasons. The main reason that it was added was that it contained many simple freedoms that everyone wanted and people knew it would make it easier to have a smoother government system.
