Before the 21st Century, school counselors were known as guidance counselors. The guidance counselors in my high school do more than coordinated testing and schedule classes for students. School counselors of today are more vital members of the education team. They play a role in student academic achievement, career, and social/emotional development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. After twenty years of teaching secondary science, I have succumbed to my true passion as an educator and that is to become a school counselor. To know that I can make a positive impact on a child’s life is rewarding for me. Being available for my students on so many different levels would be even more gratifying. I have felt for so long that the students in my school have been underserved when it comes to educating the whole child. For example, the students often come to me with their college choices, financial aid/college applications, or simply just to talk about life. I believe that we have to be mindful of the whole child if we are to educate them to be productive citizens. For example, school counselors play a critical role in preparing all students for lifelong learning and success in a global society. They also ensure students have the opportunity to reach their full potential and provide whatever support is necessary in order to help students graduate. School counselors are a valuable resource for the entire school community and often act as a buffer, problem-solving concerns between teachers and students/parents so that they never have to be addressed to the principal or assistant
