Vermont’s character was forged at the very birth of our state and the independence of our people. From the very beginning Vermonter’s wanted to be sure that their freedoms were preserved and their way of life allowed to persist indefinitely. It is interesting to note that with this mentality in mind, Vermont was never a part of the British colonies. Upon our organization as a place, Vermont formed its own republic until they decided to join the Union in 1791.
