Interaction with animals to aid in the health and welfare of humans dates back centuries. Horseback riding was used as a form of rehabilitation for children suffering from neurological disorders. Today most assistance animals are dogs that help individuals suffering from physical or mental illnesses and provide much needed assistance for those with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines service animals as a guide dog, signal dog, or any other animal specifically trained to assist an individual with a disability (Adams & Rice, 2011). Service animals are working animals and therefore not considered pets. Under the ADA, businesses and organizations that serve the public must make concessions for people with disabilities to bring their service animals into all facilities where customers normally go. These establishments include restaurants, hotels, taxis, shuttles, malls, grocery stores, theaters, zoos, parks, etc. Title III of the American Disabilities Act of 1990 specifically prohibits public accommodations from discriminating on the basis of a disability. An epileptic does not know when seizures will suddenly happen, a combat veteran finds himself back in the fight, or a paraplegic drops a book just out of reach each has a trained service dog to perform the tasks specific to their disability. Individuals with disabilities and their services dogs can now go to college they should also be allowed to go out to eat with their friends or on a spring break vacation with their service dog.
