According to the article, "home birth in the United States was mostly limited to insular religious communities like the Amish and to dedicated members of the counterculture like Gaskin, whose husband founded The Farm as a commune in the 1970s." (Goldberg) This was in the past. Due to the religious, the Amish and other members used to make their wife giving birth to a child at home. Therefore, to maintain privacy, their women gives birth at home and not looked upon as nakedness to other men. I can only guess it has to do with trusting that the Creator has made the female body with wisdom for birthing and that the medical establishment is not necessary.
