The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) in native to Brazil. It was accidently transferred to the United States in the 1930’s. They probably came from a cargo ship that docked in Mobile, Alabama. The red imported fire ant is a dull reddish color, usually with a brown or black tinge. They also have a stinger. The red imported fire ant affects humans, pets, and livestock. They attack as a colony, and cause painful stings. Some people may develop an extreme allergic reaction. They can also damage crops.
