In ancient Greek mythology there is warrior code of what makes up a hero. These heroes are often given inhuman characteristics. They are muscular, athletic, and super human. Throughout the Iliad their strengths and weaknesses are shown through conflicts on the battle fields. Achilles seems to fit the Homeric heroic mold. But does he fit the modern heroic mold? Achilles is perhaps one of Greek mythology’s most well-known hero. He is one of the central characters in Homer’s Iliad. The son of Thetis and Peleus, King of the Myrmidons, was known for his bold and ruthless courage during the Trojan War. He alone killed thousands of Trojans and was respected like a god. Does just being a good person deem you a hero? In some cases, yes it does. There are athletes, celebrities, and everyday people that society deems heroic. According to Greek mythology a hero is a warrior or chieftain of special strength, courage, or ability. Plugged into this Homeric belief, Achilles is a hero. He is one of the top chieftains of Greek history, he is courageous, and one could say because of his prowess in battle that he has special ability. In many ways, heroism is in the eye of the beholder. To a mom an extra set of hands is a hero, to a kid Batman is a hero, and to an injured person a doctor is a hero. He was a Navy Seal and known as the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history with over one hundred and sixty kills confirmed by the Department of Defense.
