Introducing a deadly concept called the use of force. The use of force sometimes obstructed and miss guided. According to the Nij(National Institute of Justice) use of force is only used by law enforcement officers under self-defense circumstances. Also used on an individual or group. When it comes to defining the use of force there is no definite definition because some say it is too harsh or should not be used at all. I believe the use of force is necessary to an extent because yes cops do need to protect themselves also, especially in certain situations. I think it just get abused a little bit because cops now are especially on high alert with all the law officers being killed. Another key point is the amount of force used, how much is enough and when does it come to a controllable stopping point. The levels of force police use are, basic verbal and physical restraint, less-lethal force and lethal force. Less-lethal force is less likely to cause death or great bodily harm. Less lethal weapons include batons, electronic devices and is some venues chemical agents. Lethal force is more likely to cause either serious bodily injury or death to another person. According to my Police book, 43.5 million contact between police and citizens noted that only 1.6 percent of all contacts involved the threat of use of force. Also about, 86.9 percent who experienced the threat of use of force felt that the police had acted improperly. Even though it seems like the numbers are high their not because it still reports a low number of police using too much force. Next, history of use of force what is common law. In the 12th century, the common law allowed police to use deadly force if they needed it to capture a felony suspect, regardless of the circumstances. Felons where not as common as they are now.
