On the other hand, Piggy represents the importance of civilization, intelligence, and innovation. Piggy comes up with the ideas on the island, however Piggy does not have the leadership abilities to get his point across, so he gets Ralph to do them. On page 15 Piggy and Ralph work together to free the conch shell from weeds in the water, but more importantly, shows Ralph how to blow into it to call in group meetings. The first sign of civilization occurs when Piggy and Ralph relay the message of only whoever is holding the conch has the right to talk, so they are not interrupted. In addition to Piggy’s natural intelligence, his ability to use scientific innovation to start the fire helped the boys stay civilized for just that much longer (41).
