The psychiatric disability that I chose for my psychiatric disability simulation was Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, also known as OCD, is when individuals suffer from severe undesirable recurrent thoughts and personal rituals. There is no proven cause for OCD. However, research shows that OCD “involves problems with communication different parts of the brain. These brain structures use the chemical messenger serotonin. It is believed that insufficient levels of serotonin are prominently involved in OCD (Wetterneck, 2014).” Rituals are known as compulsions while the recurrent thoughts are known as obsessions, hence the term Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I did this from 8 am until 10 am while at home then leading up until going to work at 11 am until 5pm. While at home I did all of compulsions but at work I did everything besides fold clothes so I replaced that with reorganizing items on my desk. My personal reaction is that having OCD symptoms causes so much distress, takes up a lot of time and significantly interfered with my case load at work. Beside the fact that I was able to get more organized, I can only imagine what it is like to organize and reorganize your office on a daily basis. It almost goes along with the old say “if it is not broke then don’t fix it.” It’s so time-consuming trying to fix things that ideally seem as though they do not need to be fixed or focused on. Especially when it takes away time from actually getting things that need to be done accomplished. At home the compulsions were not as bad as being at work. At home although I did feel a hindrance on getting ready for work because I was consistently washing my hands and checking the door to see if it was locked. I set my alarm on my phone every 8 minutes for hand washings, 10 minutes for reorganizing and checking doors, and 5 minutes for repeatedly placing things back down. At first it seemed funny but after 30 minutes passed I was more irritated than
