From this movie we found that Melvin Udall, the main character of the movie has some obvious systems of anxiety disorder. He does not like to have social activities in his daily life because he does not like to have contact with anyone. When he saw the dog in his house area, he cannot bear with it and throw the dog away although he knew that this dog is belong to his neighbor, Simon. He wears gloves every moment when he needs to touch outside things. Once he back to his house he immediately rush to the toilet to wash his hand. After using the soap, he threw it directly although it is still new. Whenever he went to restaurant for a meal, he will bring his own plastic forks and spoon. He can only accept carol, who is one of the waitress there to serve him. Once Carol is not working there he can’t even order any food. He does not know how to communicate with the people around him made him offend others although he doesn’t mean it. His panic is always overloaded especially when he is in his social life. The causes of anxiety disorder are currently still unknown. Therefore we only can judge whether someone is suffering from anxiety disorder by observing his behavior whether it is over than a normal line.
Apart from anxiety disorder, we can also find that Melvin Udall has some symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is a mental illness. Many of us have some good habits to make us feel comfortable, but it is not compulsory in our life. For those who experiencing OCD, all of the habits are much more intense and they cannot bear with things that not go by their ways. OCD can cause a lot of anxiety and it cannot be controlled.
