I am a mature student currently studying an access course in Health and Welfare at college. Returning to education was something I had been thinking about for a while and I can now say that it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I enrolled on the access course with the vision that it would help me achieve the qualifications I need to apply to university to do a degree in nursing. The access course has also been beneficial in helping me realise my potential as a student and it has improved my confidence in my abilities and I am now even more keen to push myself further to reach my goal of becoming a nurse. As an assistant in the hospital I got to experience working alongside doctors and nurses and also spent time with student nurses on work placement. My role was to spend time talking with older patients who were experiencing mental health illnesses such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia and also dementia. I also helped assist with basic duties such as taking temperatures, measuring blood pressure and helped patients with personal care. I also completed training in manual handling, food hygiene and completed a three day course on first aid at work training. When my six month voluntary placement was finished I sought work and I am now employed as a care assistant in a nursing home for the elderly. I believe that nursing is a career for committed, reliable, trusting people who are able to develop relationships with patients quickly and I have found that in my job as a care assistant that I have these skills. It can be challenging and sometimes stressful work but it is also hugely rewarding. My responsibilities include the supervision and care of a number of residents who are living with dementia.
