According to Hall & Powell (2011) narratives are “central to nursing” because it reveal significant information about health experiences of the individual shared in a clinical or non-clinical setting (p.7). Every individual has experience facing challenges on health issues to pain and illness (Hall & Powell, 2011, p. 3). This paper will examine the impact of illness and other contributing factors that shaped an individual’s overall health. The nature of the topic dictates the use of a narrative analysis based from a personal narrative story used in the profession of nursing. Jens’ coping skills and collaborative relationships have allowed Mrs. Jen to further expand the proposition about addiction. In this paper, the assumptions made about Mrs. Jen were proven to be wrong. Narrative experience Mrs. Jen is a daughter, a wife, and a mother of 3 children. Mrs. Jen works as a Registered Nurse supervisor at a hospital. One summer, she was diagnosed with Raynaud’s disease. The doctor prescribed a drug called Percocet that relieves her pain. She kept on taking Percocet 15 times per day to alleviate her pain. In 2008, she started taking Percocet from work and no one knew about it. In January 2009, she received a call from work regarding the missing narcotics. Mrs. Jen informed her family about her drug addiction and that she is under investigation. She stated, “I feel like I hit the bottom.” At work, she found who her true friends are. She felt that nothing is there to help about her addiction because she struggled even finding a counsellor. Fortunately, her old friend referred her to a specialist in the province who also implement support group for health care professionals facing addiction without health care agencies relations.
