The Iron Mountain mine is an old mining ground that is just 9 miles north of Redding. It was shut down in 1963 due to a fracture inside the mountain. The fracture was causing dangerous minerals and sulfuric acid to seep into the surface water around the area. This increase in PH caused the death of many aquatic animal and put the 70000 people that lived in the surrounding area in danger of drinking the contaminated water. Since then the EPA has tried to contain the chemicals into a single reservoir although due to storms it still causes deaths due to the rainwater overflowing the reservoir.
