Copernicus, Man of Astronomy Our Solar System. How did the people of earth come to know how it aligned? Nicolaus Copernicus is the one who proved the correct theory. Copernicus was a great astronomer, but he had a different life than you would first imagine, but nonetheless, he proved himself worthy of great achievements. Nicolaus Copernicus was an amazing astronomer with many achievements. According to Gale Resources, Nicolaus Copernicus was born February 19, 1473 at approximately 4:30 in the afternoon in Torun, Poland. He was the youngest of 4, with 2 sisters named Barbara and Cathlene and one brother named Andrew. His father, MIkolaj Kopernik, was a copper merchant. Copernicus’s mother, also Barbara, was once part of the most powerful family in Torun, the Watzerlodes. Sadly, Kopernik died when Copernicus was only 10 years old. He was first taught the Geocentric theory, the theory that everything orbits the Earth. He later started learning about the Geocentric theory’s inaccuracy. While observing the planets, Copernicus found alignments that proved everything orbited the Sun, not the Earth. This theory was known as the Heliocentric theory. After years of studying, Nicolaus Copernicus passed away on May 24, 1543. History will remember Nicolaus Copernicus through his contributions to society, such as proving the Heliocentric theory correct, and in doing so, created modern astronomy. According to Catherine M. Androvik, Copernicus noticed alignments that wouldn’t work with the Geocentric theory, and would only work with the Heliocentric theory.
