My personal philosophy on literacy is in order for a child or anyone to learn to read they must be in a whole environment. This environment should not be one where the child feels safe and is not forced to read. This environment must have an atmosphere where the child desires to read. Once there is a desire, there must be encouragement. Based on what I can recall I did not have a childhood with reading, whatever was going on in my life caused me to blank it out. I also do not recall memories of writing as a child. I think at one time I was asked to write a letter to my parents. I do not recall what I wrote. When you have no memories, it is hard to say whether they were positive or negative but all I knew was the opinion of most adults
