Without the White men moving to the West we would not be here, but they caused many lasting problems and destruction for the people and ecosystem already here. The impact started before the United States with Columbus and the Spanish and built from there. There are a few positive viewpoints that go along with the White men moving west such as helping turn a desert into land that is able to be farmed. Sadly, there are more negative points that go along the move to settle the west and the belief of manifest destiny. Between mining, hunting, farming, industrializing, overpowering the Native Americans and more, the White men had an extremely large impact on the west. Before the settlers came there were millions who roamed around the plains. Some members of the government thought that since they were a major food source of the Native Americans if they were killed off there would be more control over them, and others wanted to kill them for sport or to sell the expensive hides. Before they were declared endangered by President Roosevelt there were just a few hundred left. People shot at them from trains and people like “Buffalo” Bill, who were hired to kill them, shot more than 4,000. Mining also had a large effect on the west. It was the reason many people moved west and it brought a lot of diseases which killed the Native Americans. Parts of the ecosystem were destroyed because of blasting and digging in the mines along with a lot of deaths. The gold rush helped industrialize the west along with the start of cattle farming. Cowboys moved cattle from out west to the closest railroad to transfer them to the north east. Because of this the railroad expanded out west which helped cause the problems with buffalo and Native
