I recently wrote to you about two theoretical Foundation for circle practice that I learned in my Education course. Today, as promise, I would like to share with you four additional groups of theories that help me understand the power of the circle. The first theoretical foundation that I would like to share with you is mindfulness practice. The term “mindfulness” can be understood as “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment.”(Kabat-Zinn 2003, p. 145). This approach based on inclusion, or the idea that all students deserve equal opportunity regardless of any perceived difference. A Research in 2007 by Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development practice confirm “whole child approach to education is defined by policies, practices, and relationships that ensure each child, in each school, in each community, is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged”. That means that it's not about some us are more important than others. That we are all needed and not just humans, but every other aspect of the universe brings its gift. Everything has a purpose and a role. Each child has a special gift and parents are responsible to nurture these gifts so that the child can find their purpose in life. It is not about how talented you are, but to support and help identify the talents in others is very important. We are all different and unique and we have talents not yet discovered. Our different talents and personalities are what individualize us. In this world we need each other and our diverse qualities are what help us thrive. We need to recognize that we can’t achieve everything on our own, and that it is okay to acquire help from others. A second core assumption is that Human Being are Holistic. This core value focuses on unity, wellness, and the interrelationship of human beings and their environment. Children need to learn to first value themselves, their worth, and recognize their abilities and how to be able to do what they want in life. Holistic education teaches children about their immediate relationships with their friends and family as well as social development, health, and intellectual development.
