Melaka is one of the fourteen states of Malaysia. It is the second smallest state after Perlis and is located along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The state measures 40 kilometres in length from north to south, with a width of 69 kilometres, and has an area of 1657 square kilometres. Melaka was renowned worldwide for its rich history and numerous historical sites and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. 5 2 The recorded history of Melaka dates back many centuries. Parameswara killed Temagi and fled to the Malay Peninsular, where he discovered Melaka. 7 Melaka was officially named and opened in 1402, although the ever-present threat of Siam loomed over Melaka because of what had happened between Parameswara and Temagi.
