When hearing the word historical trauma I think about a series of traumatic events that occur to a massive group of individuals. According to Abrams (1999), “historical trauma is collective emotional and psychological injury both over the life span and across generations, resulting from a cataclysmic history of genocide” or the destruction of a particular racial or cultural group. Some examples of historical trauma or intergenerataional trauma are the Holocaust or the occurrence in trauma amongst Native Americans. Recollection of the day the Baltimore Riots of 2015 occurred after Freddie Gray’s death and how it affected the city I was born in raised in. Protesters rallied against the wrongful arrest and injuries that Gray sustained while in police custody. After being in a coma for several days and a week after his arrest, Freddie Gray died. Since before the death of Medgar Evers, and enslavement, African Americans have felt that black people were not treated equally by the police or the “white man”. As history repeats itself, we view through the social media and the news, the maltreatment of African Americans. Police brutality continues to occur in the year 2015, as the issue of racism still becomes an ongoing battle. One would say that African Americans have their own historical trauma and that what happened in Baltimore was just a portion of it , as we live in a country that prides itself on the statement “justice for all”, when in actuality, the justice and equality is just for some. In some schools we are taught about African Americans and their struggle, and how their struggle affected them emotionally and psychologically, all of which have been passed down from generation to
