A social group is a group of people who interact with one another and share similar characteristics. They also collectively have a sense of unity besides coming in myriad of sizes and varieties. They share a number of characteristics that include interest values, representation of ethnic or social background and kingship ties. They form a clique, which is a group of people that have the same interest commonly found in a school, university or generally in a setting of education. Social groups help to motivate each other and they can be used to represent ideas and opinions. Most people prefer to belong to a social group unless by nature they are loners. They play a very important role in everyone’s life as are capable of giving meaning to it. Having people just like you around you can be so motivating. The story is autobiographical and starts off by introducing Sedaris to the readers. The story builds up around a group of like-minded people like Sedaris who form a social group in their quest to learn a new language. In his quest he was not alone as he was joined by a group of people of different nationalities. “These students” as they like to call themselves form the social group and together faced the wrath of a cruel teacher who did not believe in apologising even after poking the students with a freshly sharpened pencil in the eye. All members of this social group were almost on the same level and their interactions were hilarious and sometimes pathetic. Some examples from the text which give us an insight of their feelings are shown in the lines, “Sometimes me cry alone at night.” or “That be common for I,also,but be more strong,you.Much work and someday you talk pretty.
