The killings inspired a series of civil rights cases, beginning with Martin’s. After Zimmerman, who was a neighborhood watch volunteer, shot and killed the black, unarmed teenager, his family attempted to take it to court. However, it was said by the agency that it had insufficient evidence to pursue charges. A statement by Attorney General Eric Holder said that the investigation found that the standards for a hate crime prosecution could not be met because the “young man’s premature death necessitates that we continue the dialogue and be unafraid of confronting the issues and tensions his passing brought to the surface.” He then stated that, as a nation, “we must take concrete steps to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.”
