According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism numerous studies have been conducted on various stages of the human brain’s development. Drinking at an age younger than 23, can have a profound effect on the brain’s development. Alcohol disrupts the rate of which the body produces brain cells. Drinking at a young age affects the long term thinking and memory skills of young people. The drinking may impair the young person well after they have reached the status of a fully developed brain. The Drinking Age should be raised two years to 23, in the interest of how the brain develops, number of automotive accidents caused by underage and newly legal drinkers, and limit the use of illicit drugs and sex, while under the influence.…show more content…

This includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, as well as hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drownings. (NIAAA, 2006) If the drinking age was raised to 23 these accidents could be better prevented, allowing the brain to fully mature, so more conscience decisions could be made about and before consuming alcohol.
