Jefferson is small town located in Northeast Texas with a total population of about 2,000 people. Being a town with only three stoplights and one grocery store, one might assume that living there might get pretty boring. While there are many people complain about living in Jefferson, some people disagree. Because of the small-town environment, historical charm, and central location, life in Jefferson is not as bad as it is cracked up to be. There are many advantages to living in a small town, and Jefferson is a perfect example. In Jefferson, everyone knows everyone. A quick stop to the local grocery store turns into a mini family reunion. People honk and wave when passing friends and neighbors driving down the road. From 1845 to 1875, Jefferson served as a major steamboat port and was the state’s leading inland port. However, after the completion of the Texas and Pacific Railway from Texarkana to Marshall, Jefferson soon lost its status as commercial and shipping center (Long). Nowadays, Jefferson is home to the annual Pilgrimage Festival. Reenactors, tourists, and natives alike come out and enjoy a reenactment of the town skirmish during the Battle for Port Jefferson during the Civil-War (“Jefferson Pilgrimage”). The cobblestone streets and historically preserved homes give Jefferson a quaint, charming look, and taking a tour in a horse drawn carriage sends both visitors and natives back to the past. Jefferson is also host to the Mardi Gras Upriver Festival. This has been celebrated in Jefferson for many years, originating to the steamboat era (“Mardi Gras Upriver”).
