Into The Wild This book is the story of Chris McCandless, a 24 year old Emory graduate who was found dead in the Alaskan wilderness in September 1992. McCandless grew up in wealthy Virginia. He grew in Washington, D.C. and was a very gifted athlete, great scholar,someone who showed strict moral compass, and a young man that showed passion since a young age. After he graduated the from high school he went to, McCandless spent the summer alone on a road trip across the US, during which he discovered that his father secretly had a second family during Chris’s childhood. He also drove away most of his friends with his intensity and moral certitude, and barely kept in touch with his parents. His parents thought that he was interested in law school, but instead, after he graduated with honors, he donated all his savings to charity, which were $25,000. He got in his car and drove away without telling anyone where he was going, abandoning the use of his real name along the way too. He never contacted his parents or favorite sister, Carine, again. Not too long after leaving Atlanta, McCandless deserted his car in the desert after a flash flood wet the engine, and from then on, he hitchhiked around the Northwest, getting jobs in many different places but not staying anywhere for too long. He often lived on the streets, and kept as little money and as few possessions with him as he could. He spent some months preparing and learning many skills he thought were useful. Some things he was able to learn were hunting, what were some edible plants, etc. Then after learning a few skills, he left South Dakota, where he worked for some months. After leaving South Dakota, he hitchhiked to Fairbanks. Those whom he told about the plan all warned him that he needed to be better prepared, but according to everyone, he was adamant and stubborn. In April of 1992 McCandless got dropped off near Mt. McKinley, and hiked into the wilderness. He would spend the next sixteen weeks hunting small animals, foraging, reading, and living in a deserted bus that was built to be a shelter for hunters, While he stayed in the bus, he didn’t see a single human the entire time. He was successful for the most part, although he lost significant weight. By late July, McCandless probably ate some moldy seeds, which were poisonous. The author believes that the mold contained a poison that essentially caused him to starve to death. No matter how much he ate, he was still still dying. McCandless was quickly incapacitated by the poison, which meant that he was too weak to hunt or search for food, making his death faster. Realizing he was going to die soon, he wrote a goodbye message, and a few weeks later some hunters found his body
