The Parental decision with Intersex children Intersex is a condition where a person is born intermediate between a female and a male, these kinds of births is not a topic that is common to hear about. Did you know that 1 in 1,500 births are intersex children? (Variance et al., 2006). When a child is born, a baby girl will usually get pink clothing or blankets while a baby boy will get it in the color of sky blue. When an intersex child is born, their gender is in question, who is the one able to assign the gender of this child? In this circumstance of intersex children, Parents should make the early decision about assigning their child’s gender. Well, this would be the way “The child is assigned a gender as boy or girl after tests (hormonal, genetic, radiological) have been done and the parents have consulted with the doctors on which gender the child is more likely to feel as she or he grows up” (A world free…, 2008). These tests are a useful resource and should be used to identify what gender assignment will fit the child best. This is great way for the parents to know what the best decision for the child is, and the child can focus and what he or she is supposed to focus on which is being a child. A child is not going to fully understand about gender identity he or she is too young, children want to do other things that involve having fun not finding their gender identity. He or she shouldn’t have the responsibility or worry about of finding his or her gender identity. When choosing a gender for the child, there been research that most people with an intersex condition are happy with their assigned gender they were given as an infant, and is rare for someone to change their assign gender just like people who don’t have an intersex condition (Variance et al.,…show more content…
ISNA (The Intersex Society of North America) sates that having a child set up in a genderless, third gender, intersex gender assignment can have unnecessary trauma to the child (A world free…, 2008). No child should go through a trauma or feel uncomfortable at a young age with themselves when it’s avoidable, keeping the child safe of any harm intersex or not is important. ISNA as well argues that “we are trying to make the world a safe place for intersex kids, and we don’t think labeling them with a gender category that in essence doesn’t exist would help them” (A world free…, 2008). A child is too young to make a gender decision on their own; if they choose this means they will be in a genderless category for a while until they mature. A child can have a better belonging into the world in a sense to gender. When this assignment is done for them as an infant it is safer for the child, and this assignment is revisable if the child change its mind as he or she grows
