A typical influenza vaccine is made to protect against three different viruses: an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus, and an influenza B virus (CDC). Every year, NIAID labs develop vaccines for the seasonal flu viruses/animal strains that could infect humans. (Flu.gov) The virus is constantly changing, which is why we get a new vaccine each year (Flu.gov). The vaccine is effective against the virus when the virus and vaccine are closely related (CDC). The influenza virus contains hemagglutinin proteins, which consists of a blue chain and an orange chain. The blue chain searches for the correct sugar chain in our cellular protein.
