I am an outlier in the African American community. The term Oreo-a derogatory term used to describe being black on the outside white on the inside- is used by the greater community to define people like me. I do not share the community approved interests of a young black woman: I do not like R&B or hip hop, I do not know the names of most of the current rappers or religious leaders as I am not religious much too the shame of my religious grandparents, I have a very limited knowledge of slang and for the most part do not use it. Of course, these are not things that make blackness however they are stereotypes that we as a community have bought into and perpetuated.
