Avedon, at the request of the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth (Texas) was launched in 1979 in a six-year project which has enabled it to achieve 125 portraits of people of western US. Avedon portrayed workers as miners and oil field workers in their soiled clothing, unemployed fishermen and adolescents in the West to 1979-1984. When he, for the first time, published and exhibited these works, "In the American West," was criticized for showing what some consider an unflattering face of the United States. However, Avedon has always been object of praise for having treated his subjects with the same attention and the same dignity as the one usually given to political power and celebrity.
