The music genre Rhythm and Blues is a combination of gospel, jazz and blues. Rhythm and Blues derived from gospel music that was performed in African American churches. In 1949 the name Rhythm and Blues was changed to race music by Billboard magazine. However, it was later changed back to Rhythm and Blues because race music was too offensive. Throughout the years Rhythm and Blues has had a few influential artists that helped shape it into what it is now. Rhythm and Blues was born in the American South in the years after World War II; its principal performers were Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, and Aretha Franklin.
