One of the Most Impactful Authors of the 20th Century “If liberty means anything, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear” - George Orwell. George Orwell’s life began at the start of the twentieth century. World War 1 started in 1914 and lasted until 1918, a long and bloody war that killed millions. The Spanish Civil War took place from 1936 to 1939, and greatly impacted Orwell, as he fought in the war himself fighting against the nationalists. Directly after the Spanish Civil War was World War 2, lasting from 1939 to 1945 it was the most widespread war in the history of the world, drawing in more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. Propaganda had a large presence in nearly every country involved in the war. Though he loathed the job, Orwell found himself working as a propagandist during the war, working to advance his countries national interests. George Orwell was one of the most influential authors of the twentieth century, and his works continue to have a huge impact on American culture. Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell, was born in Matihari, Bengal, India in 1903. Both of these books are taught in many schools throughout America. Through these novels, Orwell transcends death and influences the young minds of America. The messages from both books affect not only school children, but also adults, as these books are still read frequently.
