Personal Responses To Hermia's Arranged Marriage Hermia (daughter to Egeus, in love with Lysander) is facing a lot of obstacles in act 1 scene 1 due to the multiple conflicts she is facing, the time she lives in, her options, and how she responds to the problems. First of all, the conflict that Hermia is facing throughout act 1 scene 1 is that Hermia refuses to marry Demetrius ( in love with Hermia). The reason why she denies to marry Demetrius is because she truly love's Lysander who is also in love with her and Helena is desperately in love with Demetrius. The conflict type that affects act 1 scene one is person vs person - "fight between two people" . For example, both Lysander and Demetrius are having a slugfest over Hermia in other…show more content…
Second of all, The time that Hermia was living in it was rigorous. For example in her time period there was something called Filial duty in other words duty to the family. In Hermia's case her filial duty is to fulfil the request of her father to marry Demetrius. Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius and not Lysander because in Egeus eyes he sees Demetrius as a loyal and rich man but he doesn't know that Demetrius and Helena had a relationship between them. Egeus thinks young love is appearance vs reality. For example on page 11 lines 27-45 basically say that Hermia is too young to distinguish from true love and fake love and even if Lysander gives her gifts and speak with words of love she will easily fall for it. Basically he is saying that older people are wiser than young people and what ever the orders say they are correct. Third of all, she has to choose one from the three options which are 1. marry Demetrius 2. become a nun 3. die. Since she lived when filial duty was occurring and she was not fulfilling her fathers wish Theseus, duke of Athens have asked her to choose one of the choices. For instance if she choses any of the choices she will never be with Lysander and
