According to NCAA.org, approximately 8 million students in the United States compete in high school athletics, and after high school, only 460,000 of these athletes move on to become college competitors. Also, the estimated probability of a woman moving on to run college track is only 4.6 percent. These statistics ran through my head several times while running in high school and pursuing my dream of competing on the track team at Northwest Missouri State University. Going into my senior year, doubt filled my mind and I started to give up on this dream. But, one night I received a phone call from the head coach at my dream school that changed my perspective. Through this experience, I learned to never doubt my ability and to never give up on my dreams. My frustration built, and just as I was sure tears would start rolling down my face any second, I heard a faint buzzing coming from the kitchen. I wondered who would be calling at this time of night, as I slowly rose from my chair to reach my phone. When I looked at the screen, I saw a phone number that was not familiar to me, but as I looked more closely, I saw in fine print “Maryville, MO.” I was confused at first, and I glanced at my mom, who also saw the call on my phone screen. “Well, answer it.” she said, and I pulled the phone to my ear and said "Hello?" On the other end a voice answered "Hello, Katie. This is Coach Lorek, the head track coach at Northwest." I was shocked at first but, as I continued to talk with him, I started to picture myself as a college athlete at the school of my dreams, a vision that had faded away in the recent months.
