In the last chapter of Grendel, Beowulf plays a trick on Grendel. The monster innocently falls right into Beowulf’s scheme. Grendel accidentally slips on blood and falls to the ground. This allowed Beowulf to finally defeat Grendel by tearing off his arm. Eventually Grendel becomes weak from loss of blood, and his moment of death arrives. Grendel murmurs a few words in the end, but Grendel’s final words are meant as a curse, not a blessing. His words are meant to affect the animal kingdom.
