For my leadership film assessment program, I chose to write about the movie Glory. I remember when it first came out in 1989, I was 13 years old at the time and I went to see the movie with my father. After watching the movie; I remember my father explaining to me how the movie demonstration the leadership of the colonel. Even though, the soldiers were treated as less than human they were determined to fight as soldiers. Leadership is about commitment, communication and confidence which are shown throughout the movie. In the beginning of the movie, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw was unwilling to lead the first African American squad in the Civil War. Shaw treated the soldiers more like slaves than humans, and did not give them the respect that they deserved. The soldiers were not giving new uniforms and the soldiers did not have new shoes; which are important necessities to fight in a war. Shaw was also did not take care of their needs and was not listening to their concerns. But even with being disrespected by the Colonel Shaw, the soldiers still respected him. Colonel Shaw also fought to get his soldiers on the battlefield to show others how prepared and dedicated they were in fighting in the Civil War. Colonel Shaw showed his soldiers and others that he was committed to make sure that they got the respect they deserved and he did just that. When Colonel Shaw found out that his troops were only being paid $10 a month instead of the $13 a month for serving in the war; the colonel showed his soldiers that he was willing to put his needs before his soldiers. With stating that “If you men will take no pay, then none of us will.” that action showed his troops that they were proud to follow him into battle.
