What do you think of when you hear the word frog? Do you think of the green, little, long-tongued creature that only eats flies? Well think again. A new study shows that these amphibians are not really insectivores (insect eaters). Frogs not only eat insects, but also eat other non-insect species, including other frogs! The new study states that if a frog is hungry, it will eat just about anything smaller than them in their sight. Even though many herpetologists and other scientists have known about this frog cannibalism, nobody has really looked for the why answer. Because of this, (and their own curiosity) many researchers in Africa conducted research about frog diets from all over the world. They found 355 studies noticed that 1/5 of the studies mentioned frog cannibalism. According to John Measey, a senior researcher at the Centre for Invasion Biology at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and lead author of the new study, "It seems that frogs, if they are in the right place at the right time, will eat anything that moves."…show more content…
After some more research, they found out that frogs were 40% more likely to eat each other if they are invasive rather than native. They also found out that since bigger frogs usually eat smaller frogs, for every millimeter bigger in comparison, the likelihood of eating the other frog is increased by 2.8%. For example, if one frog is 6mm long and the other is 16mm long, the likelihood of the 16mm frog eating the 6mm frog is 28% ((16-6)*2.8). If the invasive species gets to be too big of a problem, then it might need to be removed to prevent any extinction of any
