Ambition, if pursued, will always lead to disaster. The Great Gatsby and Macbeth both demonstrate this in one way or another. Both characters aspiration for greatness lead to their eventual demise. The heedless pursuing of aspirations contributes to disaster. Macbeth and Gatsby’s ambition are both similar and different. Macbeth and his wife have destructive ambition. Macbeth’s ambition is influenced by his wife’s hungriness for social advancement. She will do whatever it takes to gain power and even goes as far as saying she would “And dash'd [a baby’s] brains out” if she had made the same promise Macbeth had.
