1. Identify moral and ethical concerns for this patient and relate them to the transpersonal caring relationship with the nurse. A transpersonal caring relationship moves beyond ego self and radiates to spiritual concerns and connections that tap into healing possibilities and potentials. Nurses’ moral commitment, intentionality, and caritas consciousness exist to protect, enhance, promote, and potentiate human dignity, and wholeness, and healing, wherein a person creates his or her own meaning for existence, healing, wholeness, and living and dying (Smith & Parker, 2015). Mr. Jean-Baptiste’s nurse recognized his spiritual and emotional needs; therefore, the nurse invited Mr. Jean-Baptiste to have a relative by his side and also encouraged him to bring Haitian food and learned his customs and beliefs. Watson introduced the concept of caritas and universal love as an ethic and ontology. The love defined by Dr. Watson is evident in the caring moment when the nurse recognizes Mr. Jean-Baptiste’s spiritual and emotional needs. The nurse understands that the recovery time can be difficult for Mr. Jean-Baptiste if they are not able to communicate with each other effectively. Therefore, a translator is in needed. In addition to having a professional translator, the nurse encourages Mr. Jean-Baptiste to have a relative who cares for him by his side to support him. The nurse identifies not only Mr. Jean-Baptiste’s emotional needs but also his spiritual needs. So, the nurse encourages Mr. Jean-Baptiste to bring spiritual care items and is willing to learn his Haitian customs.
