Throughout my life, my literary development has had several ups and downs. In the textbook “Writing about Writing”, Brandt states that a sponsor is anyone who “lends their resources or credibility to the sponsored but also stand to gain benefits from their success, whether by direct repayment or, indirectly, by credit of association.” (73-74) I had these strong literary sponsors early on in my life and later in my schooling, but there were several areas in between where I lacked a strong sponsor. During these areas where I didn’t have a strong sponsor, my reading and writing suffered. The peak of my literary development was during my later years in high school. This sponsor taught me more about technical writing. This came in my senior year of high school when I was offered a freshman college composition class for college credit taught by Ms. Scarbrough. I originally took because I figured it would be easier to take it during high school. I really didn’t expect to get much out of the class; however, it turned out to be one of the most important parts of my writing development. Compared to others taking this class I was miles behind in this style of writing, but afterwards I felt more confident in my overall writing ability. On the first day of class we were all handed an approximately 20-page pink packet that she referred to as “the pink bible”. She made it very clear when she gave us our copy that it was one of the most helpful tools we would receive as a student, and we should keep it for as long as possible. It had a list of everything that needed to be done for the final drafts of our papers, as well as a few examples of how to change them. A few of the items on the list were: adding transitions, changing the first word of every sentence in a paragraph to be different, and words that weren’t allowed to be in our final paper. Being able to recognize these things in my papers and having the tools to fix them for the better has drastically improved the final quality of my
