Disciplinary literacy has become an essential and integral part of the upper-grades, especially since the emphasis has been pushed forth by the common core state standards initiative. Reading over the IRA position paper on disciplinary literacy for adolescents, I found clarity in their definition of what disciplinary literacy should look like. The IRA explains that “disciplinary literacy standards are about teaching students to read like historians, scientists, mathematicians, and literary critics” (p. 4). As an ELA teacher, my specialized knowledge is not that of a mathematician, therefore, I would not be suited to teach the discipline specific literacy related to mathematics.
