“Begging for a Life Change” Struggles with Poverty and Theft in Begging For Change Begging for change is a book that will open the reader's eyes, and mind unto situations they have never struggled with. This novel should continue to be read by youth in school, despite the harsh themes it focuses on. Begging for Change focuses on the harsh realities of poverty, struggles with racial identity and the consequences of theft in America. Author Sharon Flake is a critically acclaimed writer, known for her novels which push boundaries regarding racial and economic differences among her characters, which causes strife among literary critics. In her novel Begging for Change, sequel to Money Hungry, which are both geared towards young adults, the story follows the hard life of Raspberry Hill. Raspberry’s struggles with money when she has to live with her mother's boyfriend Dr. Mitchell, and his daughter Zora. Raspberry begins to have issues with zora due to her jealousy over their economic differences. Raspberry steals money from Zora’s purse when she and her father get up to leave the dinner table. Raspberry feels guilty for the theft immediately after she’s taken the money, but she does not know how to give it back. Zora quickly notices the theft but does not confront Raspberry about the theft, nor does she tell anyone. Over the summer break Raspberry works and hangs out with other teens in the neighborhood, while avoiding rising tensions with Zora after Zora confronted Raspberry about the money and suggested she tell her father, Dr. Mitchell about her theft. Raspberry lies to her mother and the doctor about the theft and begins to question her own morals and whether she is just like her
