In the book “the Lord of the Flies”, Golding tells us how Ralph represents democracy and Jack represent dictatorship. In the beginning of the story the airplane gets shot down and landed in an island. Ralph got excited when piggy told him there were no adults, when he and Piggy find the conch, Piggy suggested “We can use this to call the others. We have a meeting. They’ll come if they hear us” (golding 16). Since there is no leader they had a vote seeing who it would be Jack or Ralph. Roger says “Let’s have a vote” “Him with the conch” “Ralph, Ralph, Ralph” (22). They started to take notice that Ralph would be a great leader. The conch in his hands means power. He wanted to be the chief but the rest chose Ralph. BUt in the end out of fear everyone except the littluns weant to Jacks side out of fear. He was the one wanted to hunt and kill and make a living, but he needed to paint his face so he could hide from himself. He wanted to be better than the others. He didn’t care about the other’s he just cared about killing and living on the island that he forgot he needed to be saved from the island. He started to trick some of the boys to make another group. Golding used Ralph because he was one of the most mature some of the times that they had to make a decision about some serious thing. Ralph gave the boys jobs, Jack was responsible for keeping the fire going, but he was to excited for hunting when the ship passed the fire was out. Ralph was so pissed but Jack could care less. When Simon said that there was a beast, Ralph changed because he to was scared but was not trying to admit it because he was the leader so, instead of stopping the boys from killing Simon, Piggy and he had been in the dance too. “I wasn’t scared,” said Ralph slowly “I was- I don’t know what I was.” (156). Ralph went along with the the group he was tired of being a goody two shoes. This is important at the end of the chapter because when Piggy gets killed and Ralph is being chased a naval officer found them and asked “What have you been doing? Having a war or something?” (201). The officer was joking but that was the truth because when the one that does not things to go wrong cannot take it anymore and break. That’s what happened to Ralph he was being pressured by Jack and he had no options. Even though that happen to Ralph at the end of the book, he was still strong and bold.
