Fighting For One's Country According to Infowars.com “America has been at war 93% of the time since 1776”. This is just one of the reasons why people want to protest war. There are many different ways people can protest wars and writing is one of these ways. It is a powerful way if the writer uses different methods that inspire you. Writers do different things to get their post across when writing by using irony, imagery and structure effectively. Irony is an important element that writers use to show difference between expectation and reality. Stephen Crane uses it to protest war in “War Is Kind” he opens his readers eyes when people find out that he is really explaining the horrible events in war. Example of who applies this would be Tim O'Brien in "The Things They Carried" by using parallel structure when he wrote it. He would use the structure by listing a name the who they were to show that many different people were affected by war didn't matter if the soldiers were smart, strong, brave, or scared. "Dave Jensen, who practiced field hygiene" (O'Brien) he was a smart man and was still very affected by the horrible conditions of the war. O'Brien also would point out the horrible condition in war by emphasizing how easy it was to die without these thing. "Because you could die so quickly" (O'Brien) or when he says "Because the nights were cold, because the mosoons were wet" (O'Brien) he did this to show the readers how terrible the conditions were to fight in the war. Another writer that applies a structure to protest war is Kevin Powers in "The Yellow Birds" he accomplishes this by putting his writing in a scrambled ordered or disorganized. He writes to show you war can make you have grouse me and hunted thoughts "or should I have said I wanted to die" (Powers) the man in the story wants to die because of the things he did and saw. That takes extremely hard times to want to not live, shows how messed up the guy is thinking because then he starts scrambling about other thing in the
